Vietnamese exporters go online

Following the COVID-19 epidemic, the internet economy and changing consumer buying habits have increased exports and commodity consumption, allowing Vietnamese products to access other markets.

Cross-border e-commerce platforms have led to sales gains of 70–80% for numerous enterprises. Digital transformation and technology application have increased product value and competitiveness in the global market and saved time and capital.

Last year, Nguyen Van Thanh, Director of the E-commerce Development Center under MoIT's Vietnam E-commerce and Digital Economy Agency, said that online retail sales in Vietnam reached $16.4 billion, with the digital economy projected to reach $49 billion by 2025.

Recent regulatory partnerships with Amazon and Alibaba have provided export training to Vietnamese MSMEs. Courses helped 1,300 MSMEs establish Amazon and Alibaba shops last year.

According to statistics, 3,250 enterprises and 806 cooperatives in Son La, a northern mountainous region, use social media and e-commerce to market agricultural products. Son La farmers have sold over 500 tons of fruits online since early this year.

E-commerce connection projects run by the MoIT and localities have helped thousands of Vietnamese firms access distribution systems and develop the habit of online shopping.

MoIT will also concentrate on application capacity and e-commerce, notably cross-border e-commerce, in the near future.
