Long Thanh Int’l Airport expected to contribute 3-5% of Vietnam’s GDP

Once completed, the Dong Nai province-based airport project could contribute 3-5% of Vietnam’s GDP, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc told a ceremony to start work on the the $16-billion project on Tuesday.

The project could be among the 16 most anticipated airport projects in the world. The airport, situated at a favorable geographical location, which will be invested with modern equipment and advanced aviation technology, capable of handling the largest types of civil aircrafts is Vietnam’s largest infrastructure project.

The airport is a national project of special importance, holding huge significance to promoting the country’s socio-economic development and ensuring national defence-security, said PM Phuc.

Construction began on the first phase which has a total investment of about $4.72 billion, scheduled to be completed and put into operation in 2025.

The first stage of the project is divided into four component projects. Upon completion, the Long Thanh airport will have one runway, one passenger terminal and auxiliary categories with a capacity of 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tons of cargo per year.

In the first phase, a runway measuring 4,000 meters long and 75 meters wide will be constructed, together with a taxiway and apron system to ensure the operations of airplanes, as well as a 123m-high air traffic control tower.

The number of air passengers in the southern region would reach 65 million by 2025 and 80 million by 2030. In addition, the demand for air cargo transport is increasing, while most of local airports are overloaded.

The project will help foster air routes and connectivity between Vietnam and the ASEAN countries, and between Vietnam and other countries and ease the chronic passenger overload at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City.

After 2030, it may become a transit airport in Asia and the world as a whole as it will take only three hours to fly from the airport to Japan or South Korea.

Once fully constructed, the airport will have four runways and four terminals capable of handling 100 million passengers and five millions tons of cargo per year.
